In Argentina, the 'Sofia Alert' system has been activated eight times since its implementation in 2019. Its purpose is to mass-disseminate the images and information of missing children nationwide.
The last activation was for the case of 2-year-old Esmeralda Pereyra López, who is being intensively sought in Cosquín, Córdoba, since Wednesday afternoon, according to the Argentine News Agency (NA).
The four cases that are still ongoing and have significant national resonance are those of Lian Flores in Córdoba, Loan Danilo Peña in Corrientes, Guadalupe Lucero in San Luis, and Sofía Herrera in Tierra del Fuego.
Regarding the remaining cases, the children were found in good health after a massive dissemination of their information and extensive search operations. One such case involved a newborn baby in Salta who was stolen from a hospital. She was found after the case went viral. Another case is that of a 7-year-old girl who was abducted by a man and was rescued a few hours later in the province of Buenos Aires. In Punta Indio, a 10-year-old girl was reported missing and was later found safe and sound at a neighbor's house following the alert.
Why is it called the 'Sofia Alert'?
The system is named after 3-year-old Sofía Herrera, who disappeared on September 28, 2008, at a campsite in the city of Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego province. The program was created in 2019 and includes a committee composed of the Ministry of Security, the National Prosecutor's Office, and the National Secretariat for Childhood, Adolescence, and Family.
